Bridges Conference 2008

Five of my algorithmic artworks were selected to be a part of the mathematical art exhibit at Bridges Conference 2008, curated by Robert Fathauer. This art and math conference happens every year in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands—the birthplace of M.C. Escher—and gathers together mathematicians, artists, musicians, and more. The conference emphasizes interaction between artists and conference participants, and therefore expects accepted artists to attend. I am more than happy to do this, as is my wife, who will be on summer vacation, but money is very tight and we'll need help to make it there.

When you have some time, please take a look at our support pages, where you can read more about the trip, leave us a note or suggestion, or help us financially. Bridges takes place from July 24th to July 29th.

Atlantic Center for the Arts Residency

I have been accepted to the ACA's Digital Art Project Residency with John F. Simon! This is an amazing opportunity that I've been looking forward to ever since I heard about it. The ACA is holding this residency from August 4th to August 24th with three very well-known digital artists, and the atmosphere is sure to be electric and inspiring. Special thanks to Lorraine Lax, a fellow artist who heard about the residency and suggested that I apply.

SIGGRAPH 2008 : Slow Art

Tiled Faces was accepted to this well-known annual conference and exhibition, which takes place at the LA Convention Center from August 11th to August 15th. My piece will be a part of Slow Art, a small juried component of the conference.

Art Koltsovo : Illuminators

My art was accepted to a new and exciting exhibition at the Koltsovo Airport in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Illuminators consists of prints and video works displayed "in the round," playing off the meaning of the airport's name and the symbolism of port holes on planes, the foyer of the international terminal, and the world. Helios was a perfect match for this exhibit and will now be a part of the airport's permanent collection. There are some fun videos and photos from the opening here.

Math and Art @ Axiom : Updates

Amy and I had a wonderful time during our spring break in Boston, where we experienced both an amazing wedding, and the group exhibit I was a part of at Axiom Gallery. The co-curators, Heidi Kayser and George Fifield, were so gracious to us, meeting us at the gallery so my family who were in town could see the exhibit. You can see photos of the opening posted by Keith Peters, one of the other artists. You can also read a great review of the show on Rhizome.org, and an article in the Boston Globe that discusses the show. Incidentally, the article was on the front page of Rhizome, which was on a projector at NYU during the "Futures of the Internet" panel discussion. (I get excited by things like this... you can get a good view at 15:45 and 52:55. The discussion is pretty interesting, by the way.)

404 Festival @ Art Basel

SA_1188415571 will travel with the rest of the 404 Festival to Basel, Switzerland, for Art Basel 2008 from June 4th to June 6th.

Orphan Works Legislation

If you are an artist, photographer, or designer, you have probably heard about the Orphan Works legislation that has come back up in Congress. If you haven't, it's worth doing some research, as it could affect your professional life and the way you do business. A link for the detractors and one for the supporters.

If you've made it this far, here's another little tidbit: I've heard that it can be hard to explain my artwork—how I create it, what it means, etc—so I am going to produce a video or two sometime in the near future. I'll stick myself on camera, do my best to explain the algorithms and math that underly my artwork, and post it on YouTube and my website. Keep your eyes peeled!

Until next time,

-Nathan
